Among the players believed to be in contention for a spot with the Senators this season is 2011 first-round pick Matt Puempel who is coming off of a 30 goal campaign in the AHL as a rookie. Puempel has seen growth in all phases of his game, leading many to believe that he is a strong contender to make his NHL debut in 2014-15. A focus area to improve his game this season? Lower body strength.

He explains...

"I think the biggest thing was leg strength. You realize how much you have to skate throughout the year and how rough it gets in the corners and how strong you have to be on the puck. That's something I really focused on this year was a lot of lower body mobility and strength," said Puempel. "It's something I feel comfortable with now and something which, talking to Ottawa, was something I had to work on and single leg stuff. I feel good."

In 74 games with the Binghamton Senators last season, Puempel recorded 30 goals and 48 points as an AHL rookie. He earned the Binghamton Rookie of the Year award and finished amongst the AHL's rookie top-10 in both goals and points.

Much of the talk surrounding Senators rookie and training camps have centered around 2013 first round selection Curtis Lazar and his chances of making the NHL roster. Entering camp as a defending WHL and Memorial Cup champion after a very solid 2013-14 season, there are many who expect Lazar to contend for a spot on the Senators' roster for game one in Nashville.

In addition to coming off of a season in which he was very effective for both the Edmonton Oil Kings and Canada's World Junior squad, Lazar has added 10-15 pounds of muscle which he believes should help him compete against the bigger, stronger professional competition.

"We'll see, there has been a lot of speculation this summer and I'm just happy to come here and play — just be myself. I'm not expecting a lot of myself, you just come to try and learn," said Lazar. "They've got the vets in place who really helped me out. It's my second camp, I just want to take a step forward and see where it leads me."

In 58 games with the Oil Kings last season Lazar recorded 41 goals and 76 points before adding 10 goals and 22 points during the WHL playoffs.

The Senators begin their rookie tournament campaign at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13.
