With the Sens set to unveil jersey numbers for Bobby Ryan and Clarke MacArthur tomorrow, I thought it would be useful to pass along an interview MacArthur had recently with the Team 1200 in Ottawa.

He has yet to have a formal media appearance as a member of the Sens, so this is the first chance we've had to get his thoughts on things.

With the offseason comes plenty of opportunity for players of prominence to give back to their community. Sens forward Cory Conacher is using his summer to contribute to a cause which is very close to him.

July 10 marked the first ever Cory Conacher JDRF Golf Tournament, with proceeds heading to JDRF research in an effort to put an end to Type 1 diabetes. Conacher himself has overcome Type 1 to reach the NHL and is doing what he can as an NHLer to focus his efforts on aiding the cause going forward.

“I've had diabetes for 14 or 15 years now and it's really close to my heart. I just want to give back and help some of the families that are in need. It's an expensive disease, a lot of the technology that kids need nowadays is expensive,” said Conacher. “I think it's important for guys like myself who are capable of holding a golf tournament or ball hockey tournament or something along those lines to raise money. It's helpful for those families.”

For Cory, the opportunity to give back is a way of acknowledging the roles people who are behind the scenes played in his quest to make the NHL. Now that he has arrived, he has that same opportunity to influence those who are persevering through similar circumstances in a positive manner.

“It's huge. There are so many people that go unnoticed that have helped you throughout your life and whenever I do interviews that are sit down types of interviews, I try to name all those people off,” said Conacher. “Whether it's old coaches or people in my family that have been by my side my whole life. My parents with their support with the diabetes and friends and different people like that, those people are huge to our success here and the reason why we can do the things we do today. It even goes back to teachers and professors in high school and college.”

This week’s golf tournament is just the latest endeavour on Conacher’s behalf for JDRF. He also spends time doing speaking engagements or providing memorabilia to aid the cause. It’s something he’ll continue to do whenever the opportunity arises.

“I always try to give back. If someone needs a signed stick or something for a charity or they want me to pop in and talk to kids and stuff like that, I try to do that as much as possible. I do that with diabetes, I do little camps, I talk to families who have diabetes,” said Conacher. “I'm totally fine with that, that's something I'll do no matter what the circumstances are. Like I said, it's really close to my heart and I care about people who have been there my whole life.”

Those looking to give Cory a hand in his efforts should visit his website -- -- where you can find more information on events he’ll be involved with or find ways to set up a function of your own to lend a hand. Before you know it, the second annual Cory Conacher JDRF Golf Tournament will be just around the corner.

9:00 AM: We're getting into the final days and hours of development camp here in Kanata as the players will go through their final workouts of the week today.

Yesterday brought some intense work at the Sensplex both in the fieldhouse and on the ice with everything from sprinting to self defence to one-on-one drills being covered. Today the group will hit the ice this morning for a series of workouts before taking off for a super secret team-building outdoor activity. It is a day of fun shrouded in mystery.

Sens TV was on hand at the Sensplex fieldhouse on Sunday and got a rundown of the day's activities as well as talking to Mika Zibanejad and Jean-Gabriel Pageau about the bonds that have formed from playing in the NHL together.

9:30 AM: Another day means another day of development camp here in Kanata as the group of young Sens is on to their fifth day of work here at Canadian Tire Centre and Bell Sensplex.

Day four culminated in the always popular, well attended camp scrimmage. Team Black, powered by a top line of Mika Zibanejad, Cory Conacher and Curtis Lazar, took the game by a 3-1 score. Lazar and Conacher were the top point getters on the night. Lazar potted a goal and added an assist, while Conacher had a pair of helpers in the win.

Today is back to a regular day of on and off-ice workouts for the camp so stay tuned here for a behind the scenes look at what they're up to.
