Karlsson: Season over

Sens GM Bryan Murray spoke with the media earlier this afternoon about the status of Erik Karlsson and broke the news that the reigning Norris trophy winner's season is "effectively over". Karlsson underwent successful surgery on his left Achilles which had been cut 70% and his current timetable for a return is set between 3-4 months.

When asked about the NHL's decision to not further discipline Pens winger Matt Cooke, Murray said: "That's not my job. I'm outraged that we lost Erik Karlsson and I'm disappointed for him but that's not my call."

The Senators GM also answered questions from the media about how this could see him become more active in the trade market. While he didn't expect any of the other NHL general managers to do him any favours, he did say he was actively looking, although cautiously.

"I don't want to trade our top prospect for a short term solution", Murray said, "I'm also reluctant to trade our first round pick at this point".

The loss of Karlsson adds to the already large list of current injured Sens players that includes Jason Spezza, Jared Cowen, Milan Michalek, Peter Regin, Guillaume Latendresse and prospects Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman. When asked how the team could rebound from so many key players lost to injury, Murray answered: "Craig Anderson has to be great. The defense has to be great and we'll need to take a 'by committee' approach to scoring goals".
