Alfredsson finalist for Messier NHL Leadership Award

Another day, another award finalist under the leadership category for the Sens. With Paul MacLean's place in the running for the Jack Adams already confirmed, it was announced on Monday that Daniel Alfredsson is a finalist for the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award.

The award recognizes the player "who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season." Here are Alfredsson's qualifications, courtesy of NHL.com...

Alfredsson, the NHL's longest-serving active captain, is the Senators' all-time leader in numerous categories, including games played, goals, assists and points. He has taken a leadership role off the ice as well, working with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health, and the Sens Foundation.

Alfredsson has supported the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa for the past 10 seasons, purchasing tickets and suites for club members to attend Senators games and serving as title sponsor of Ringside for Youth, the club's primary fundraising event during the season. Since 2008, he has been the spokesperson and champion for the Royal's "You Know Who I Am" campaign, leading the way to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental-health issues. In addition, Alfredsson has supported the Royal's "Do It for Daron" campaign to assist in raising the profile of youth mental-health issues.

It has been no secret to anyone following the team that Alfredsson's guiding influence has played a big role in the 2013 Sens accomplishment to this point in time. He has been heralded by coaches, teammates and management for his work with the team over the course of what proved to be a very challenging season shaped by injuries to stars and the integration of young players into the lineup.

One could argue very confidently that the Sens would not be preparing for Game 4 in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs without Alfredsson setting the direction.

Craig Anderson spoke to the influence Alfredsson has on the team and shed some light on what he brings away from the spotlight.

"What he brings to the table is that calmness, working hard. He's the hardest working guy in the room. Sometimes you guys don't see that side of him. He's a guy that he's tired, he's had a long day, a couple days of practice or we've played a lot of games in a row, yet he's the first guy out there working on his game or he's the first guy in the weight room making sure he's ready to go. I think that's rubbed off on the guys. His preparation level. He's a leader by example and when he does talk he moves mountains."

Last season Alfredsson won the 2012 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to "the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community." He was the first Senator to win the award and could become the first to win the Messier Award in 2013.

The other finalists for the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award are Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks.
