Draft Profile: Morgan Klimchuk

Inside the Senate will be taking a look at 40 prospects ahead of the Entry Draft on June 30. Up next is Morgan Klimchuk...

If you’re looking for what-ifs surrounding Regina Pats star Morgan Klimchuk, a good place to start is what if the 5-foot-11, 180 pound Calgary native had played for a stronger WHL side?

Klimchuk bared the brunt of the load for the Pats in 2012-13. They didn’t have enough to work their way into the post-season, finishing their season in 11th out of 12 teams in the Eastern Conference. Those collective struggles didn’t hinder Klimchuk who scored 36 goals this season, finishing amongst the league’s top 20 goal scorers and accounting for just under 20 per cent of the Pats goals scored. That production also carried through to the World U-18s where he helped Canada win gold.

With a strong work ethic and a good north-south game up the wing, Klimchuk generates offence with quick hands and good speed in the offensive zone. That high effort output carries over into the defensive zone as his game has taken great strides since he made the jump to major junior.

Like most players at this level, his play away from the puck will need to continue to improve, as well as his stride’s initial burst if he’s to gain separation from NHL-calibre defenders. Putting on additional weight would also aid his style of play at the professional level.

Klimchuk’s skillset will lend itself well to a two-way forward role in the NHL, it’s simply a matter of how far that development comes along. Assuming he continues on this current path, he will offer consistent goal scoring and special teams upside wherever he plays.

While most mock drafts will have Klimchuk off the board in the second round, a run on wingers could certainly see him come off the board in round one.
