Draft Profile: Ryan Hartman

Inside the Senate will be taking a look at 40 prospects ahead of the Entry Draft on June 30. Up next is Ryan Hartman...

Any teams looking to fill their system with guys who are “hard to play against” will want to take a long look at Plymouth Whalers forward Ryan Hartman.

Hartman is a pesky player who brings some offensive punch to his game as well. In his first OHL season with the Whalers he recorded 60 points in 56 games, and had 120 PIMs to his credit as well. As a member of the Team USA World Juniors team, Hartman had three points in seven games to go with 16 PIMs en route to a gold medal.

As a player, Hartman gives you high effort in all three zones. He’s a tenacious forechecker who likes laying into defenders and he possesses a high awareness on defence. Offensively, he can generate from anywhere with a good shot and the willingness to drive into the slot. Above all else, he is an effective pest who can help your team by way of his own skill, while also throwing off an opponent’s top skill players as well.

A byproduct of Hartman’s style of play are concerns regarding discipline. He has been prone to moments of poor judgment and putting his team shorthanded because he commits too thoroughly to his agitation role. From a physical perspective, he is a bit undersized at 5-foot-11, 187 pounds and he does not have the high end speed you may typically see from a player of that frame.

With the so-called skilled pest replacing the traditional enforcer role in a team’s bottom six, Hartman should be coveted by many teams in the draft given his ability to aggravate the opposition and provide his own boost to a lineup offensively or on special teams. The size may be a concern, but he does play bigger than his frame would dictate.

Expect Hartman to be taken in the late first round.
