There are many famous NHL last names in this year’s Entry Draft but none may come with more name recognition than that belonging to Max Domi of the London Knights.

Domi is a far cry from his father, Tie, who plied his trade for years as a pugilist at the pro level. Boasting plenty of skill with the puck, Max was a dominant scorer in the OHL this season, recording 87 points in 64 games for the Knights prior to adding another 32 in 21 games during the playoffs. He also won a gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka tournament, chipping in with seven points in five games for Canada.

The bread and butter of Domi’s game comes with the puck on his stick as he has the ability to instantly create offence for his team by driving play towards the opposition’s goal. Furthermore, he is equally adept at creating and finishing with good offensive playmaking ability and a shot that can beat anyone. He is the type of player that brings a crowd to its feet when he touches the puck with his speed and creativity.

With Domi the offensive output can falter into a high risk, high reward proposition. Occasionally he’ll slip into trying to do it all himself and forcing the play, which gets harder and harder as the competition does. Moreover, he can become lax in his own zone as he waits for opponents to turn the puck over or teammates to force it for him. His two-way game has improved since his rookie season but it is still a work in progress.

Between his immense offensive talent and his propensity for playing with the patented Domi family chip on the shoulder, Max could blossom into a quality scoring forward at the NHL level. There is still a long way for him to come from a developmental perspective, but the talent is all there for him to be an impact player in the NHL. Depending on the impression he makes come the fall, its not inconceivable that Domi begins his NHL career in 2013-14.

Expect Domi to be selected in the middle of round one.
