Draft Profile: Adam Erne

Any team looking to add a prototypical power forward to their cupboard will be a taking a good look at Quebec Remparts forward Adam Erne come draft day.

Erne, a 6-foot-1, 195 pound winger, had a quality offensive year in Quebec playing under now-Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy. In 68 games this season he scored 28 goals and added 44 assists to come in at just over a point per game. In the playoffs he recorded five goals and 10 points in 11 games.

With his frame and a very good stride, Erne has an innate ability to frustrate defenders. While he doesn’t have the most dazzling puck handling skills you’ll see, he has a good burst when he gets his legs going and his size makes him very difficult to knock off the puck. He plays a robust style and regularly drives the net, draws penalties and lays out opponents. He is also considered a very good finisher around the goal.

Despite his offensive proficiency, Erne is not the most creative playmaker, which can make his offensive game somewhat one-dimensional. Moreover, there have been some concerns about his conditioning. From a training perspective, many feel that he has yet to truly tap his physical potential because his body’s strength and stamina isn’t at the same level as his skillset.

The combination of his size, speed and demeanour means Erne could blossom into a very promising power forward at the next level. He has a good grasp on how to get to the areas on the ice that will bring him success and can put a defender on his heels when he gets rolling downhill. If his strength and conditioning truly hit the next level he could be a steal, even as a first rounder, especially with scoring power forwards becoming such a hot commodity.

Expect Erne to come off the board in the mid-to-late first round.
