Sens sign Corvo

The Ottawa Senators have signed defenceman Joe Corvo to a one-year contract. It will be his second stint with the team after he played 127 games for the Sens from 2006-2008.

Since departing Ottawa after joining the Sens as a free agent from Los Angeles, Corvo has made stops in Boston, Carolina and Washington and has amassed 300 career points in 689 NHL games.

From the official release...

Corvo, 36, appeared in 40 of 48 possible contests with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2012-13. He recorded 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) and 14 penalty minutes over that span. He is returning to Ottawa after previously playing 127 games for the Senators from 2006 to 2008 and currently ranks tied for 17th among all-time franchise defencemen in scoring with 64 points (14 goals, 50 assists).

The 6-1, 210-pound, native of Oak Park, Ill., was originally signed as a free agent by the Senators on July 1, 2006, after beginning his National Hockey League career with Los Angeles in 2002 and spending his first three NHL seasons with the Kings. He has also played for the Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals.

With the signing, the Sens appear to have filled the additional depth slot they were looking to address after the acquisitions of Bobby Ryan and Clarke MacArthur. Corvo will give them another veteran defender who can bring offence from the blueline and play the power play.

While it's currently unclear if the Sens are all set heading into training camp -- GM Bryan Murray has stated his desire for a player within the organization to claim vacant roster spots -- they are, at the very least, a step closer to being the group we can expect come training camp.

Here's what the Sens GM had to say about the signing of Corvo...

Joe brings us a veteran defenceman that has a history of scoring points in the National Hockey League. He is now one of seven defenceman that we have in the organization and we need depth -- or we needed depth -- and we certainly have that provided now in Joe. He has been here, he has an understanding of what it takes to play in this market now and, again, the most important thing with Joe is he's a veteran guy that can play on the power play, he can shoot the puck well, address some of the needs that are needed in the league today where you need to get points from your back end and he's one of those people that can provide it.
