Sens to play in Heritage Classic game

The Ottawa Senators will be heading west for some fresh air this season as they’ll be playing the 2014 Tim Hortons Heritage Classic against the Vancouver Canucks at BC Place.

The game will pay tribute to a game played in 1915 between the Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Millionaires when the Sens represented the National Hockey Association and the Millionaires were part of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. Vancouver went on to win the Stanley Cup later that year while Ottawa went on to titles in 1920, 1921, 1923 and 1927.

“With one of the world’s great facilities as the setting, and one of the world’s most scenic cities as the backdrop, the 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at BC Place in Vancouver will honor hockey's Canadian heritage,” Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “With the excitement, the entertainment, the competitiveness and the fun of this game, the Canucks and Senators will create special memories for hockey fans everywhere.”

The Heritage Classic will be the Sens first opportunity to play in an outdoor game since the format was introduced in 2003 in Edmonton.

“The opportunity to participate in this year’s Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic is something that is very exciting for both our players and our staff,” said Bryan Murray. “Particularly playing in Vancouver, and against another Canadian team, it is an event that will really provide some nice nationwide recognition for our hockey club. Outdoor games have quickly become marquee events within the NHL calendar and the chance to play in one for the first time is a significant occurrence for our franchise.”

The game between the Sens and Canucks is set to take place on March 2, 2014. The rest of the NHL’s schedule will be announced next week.
