Memorable Monday: Turris\' OT Snipe

It’s another “Memorable Monday” here on Inside the Senate and, today, we take a look at what — in this writer’s opinion — was the nicest OT winner of the season for the Sens.

On March 16 in Buffalo, the Sens found themselves in the midst of an extra time streak. Coming off of shootout losses to Boston and Montreal, Ottawa was looking to turn around their fortunes. Lo and behold, they insisted on playing additional time for the third consecutive game and, being the third time, it was naturally the charm.

With the Sabres’ Christian Ehrhoff in the box for interfering with Mika Zibanejad, the Sens power play went to work 4-on-3. Kyle Turris, having scored earlier in the second period on a wrap around, was the focal point of the attack, stationing himself just beneath the faceoff dot to the right of Buffalo’s Ryan Miller. As a pair of penalty killers prepared to converge on Daniel Alfredsson, Turris readied himself for a pass and ripped a shot over the shoulder of Miller to win the game for the Sens with 1:07 left in overtime and end the career of the water bottle fastened to the top of Miller’s net.

The Sens went on to win five of their next six after the Turris OT winner and steadily moved closer to their eventual playoff spot.

Watch the goal here...

The goal was Turris’ sixth of the season — he finished the year with a team high 12 goals and 29 points — and his second game winner. He later led the Sens in playoff goal scoring with six in 10 games. The regular season totals tied career highs in goals, assists and points, despite the shortened season and tougher minutes with Jason Spezza’s absence.

As the team is poised to have even more depth up front in 2013-14, expect new bests across the board from Turris.
