Pageau on trying make the team
Despite being the darling of the 2013 playoffs, Jean-Gabriel Pageau is in a battle to make a very deep Sens roster out of training camp. While he turned many heads at the rookie tournament in London one week ago, the 20 year old Ottawa native has yet to nail down a permanent roster spot with the big club.
Pageau spoke on Friday about the fight to make the team's roster, playing centre vs. the wing and more.
Here's what he had to say...
On camp thus far:
We won our scrimmage so it's always fun but I can see that the competition is going to be hard so I'm just trying to go out there and work hard.
On the battle to get a spot:
I think I need to make my spot again, I think there's a couple of places but I need to make it my place and I'm just going out there and working as hard as I can and after that I can't control the decision of the coach.
On what he has to do to get noticed:
I think the practices and scrimmages here are really important, even off the ice in the gym it's important to give everything I have. Obviously during the game and the pre-season games I'm going to have to step up my game and show that I can play here.
On playing centre vs. wing:
I think my natural position is centreman but I would go winger if I need to. I'm ready play any kind of role I just want to stay up here with the team.
On the differences:
It's mostly responsibilities, you can see the game different a little bit. I think it all comes from the same basis, when you have the puck go try and score goals and when you don't defend your zone.
On his chemistry with linemates:
I think the lines have moved a little bit, we're one less player on our team, but I think we did well in terms of hockey. We kept it simple and won the game so it's always more fun.
On if he has talked about moving to wing:
No I haven't talked to him (Coach MacLean) about it, but we'll see. Maybe in the future he'll ask me but I'm still a centreman so I'll try and do my best at that position.
