Coach MacLean post-practice - 12.31.2013

Sens head coach Paul MacLean updated the status of the team's injuries to Chris Neil, Chris Phillips and Jason Spezza after practice on Tuesday and offered thoughts on the emergency recall of Mark Stone from Binghamton.

Here's what he had to say...

On injuries:

Neiler looks like he's not as serious but I think he's still missing the game on Thursday, Jason will be out for Thursday, Chris Phillips had another good day of practice and it appears like he'll be ready to go on Thursday, but we're going to practice tomorrow and make a final determination on Thursday.

On Stone:

Well Mark has been here a couple of times and been interrupted by injuries either here or there. He's a player we think an awful lot of, he's got good size, he's got a good mind for the game, he's good with the puck, he can kill penalties, he can play on the power play, he can be around the net. We like a lot of the things that he brings. He is playing very well down there right now and we felt that there's an opportunity there with the injury to Neiler to give him a look and see what he can do.

On Spezza:

(Jason) went for a public skate today so that's a start of the process of getting him back…I didn't talk to him, I don't think there was any difference but the fact that he skated I guess is progress.

On Neil's timetable:

Well that's to be determined still. The first day after the injury it has settled down better than we anticipated it would last night. Now we have to give it another. I don't know if we gave it a determination of what it would be or how long it would be at this point, I still believe it's going to be a little bit more than day-to-day but we don't have a number if it's one to three or whatever weeks it is until they respond a little bit more tomorrow or the next day.

On if there's pressure on Stone to produce:

Well we don't feel like we put pressure on them to produce. There's enough pressure playing in the National Hockey League without saying I have to do this, I have to do this. All we want is for him to come up and be himself and do what he does and play to his strength and we're going to try to put him in a place where he can play to his strengths and get him comfortable in the league as quickly as we can and see if he can help us be a better team.
