Coach MacLean post-practice \u2014 2.19.2014

The Sens hit the ice for their first practice after the Olympic break and, as per usual, head coach Paul MacLean offered his thoughts after the skate.

Here's what he had to say...

On Jared Cowen:

Flu — I guess he doesn't like training camps. He's sitting out another one, but he has got the flu... We're hoping he comes in and can skate tomorrow but he should be fine by the weekend, definitely by Monday of next week I would think.

On the plan for practices going forward:

Sunday has to be a day off. We'll practice tomorrow outside at Jules Morin, kind of excited about doing that, it's a good opportunity for the guys to have some fun. Friday, Saturday we're just going to work at our game really. Basically you have an opportunity in the middle of the year to have a training camp so you can review or make changes or adjustments to the way that you play based on the way you played the first 59 games and it gives you an opportunity, we feel, to be prepared for the last 23.

On changes going forward:

I think tweaks here and there, we're not going to change anything major but one thing about little tweaks is once we get into the schedule, this is a practice block which you don't have in the season. You can make subtle changes and do things, once we start playing the games again we have 23 games in 46 days so there's not many practices left. This is a good opportunity to practice and get playing the right way for when the 27th comes around.

On Chris Phillips:

Well if we were playing tonight or tomorrow he might not be (ready to go) because he's just coming back but he skated today and was a full participant in the practice so we take that as being real positive. I don't know that he had any issues that I heard of so we expect by the 27th he'll be ready to go.

On watching Olympic hockey:

I've been watching as much as I can get to and see, it has been good hockey.

On Erik Karlsson's Olympic play:

Well is he the top scorer in the tournament? He's arguably the best player, I don't know if he is the best player or not but he has played well enough for Sweden to be where they are and we're excited about that. I thought that Milan Michalek — I saw the Czech game yesterday and I thought he was one of their best forwards. That's exciting news for us. Milan, I'm not sure when he gets back here now that they got defeated today but it was a good Olympics for him and we hope it gives him a lot of confidence.

On having a well rested team:

Well what I read today apparently it's a huge advantage for us historically so we certainly hope that it is, but having experienced it before when we had a lot of players at the Olympics, it can be an issue. We feel that right now with this block that we have to practice with almost all of our players in place it should be an opportunity for us to get out of the gate and hit the ground running.
