Foligno: We're All Excited To Get Started
It's the first day of training camp and we're all excited to be back. You're a little nervous to do the testing and get all that going but for the most part, everyone's just so excited to be back and to see each other again. Just to get back into that atmopshere really brings along with it a lot of good things for hopefully the next couple of weeks.
As some of you may know, I passed on playing for Team USA at the world championship back in May to stay here and get a head start on training for this season. I made that commitment because I want to make a commitment to this team. I feel like I need to take that next step as a player. I don't think I've ever had a really, really bad year, but I had an inconsistent year. I just don't want to have that any more. I wanted to make sure I worked on the things I needed to work on and have no excuse for anyone to say anything but he's in good shape and he's ready to go.
Mentally, I feel a lot better and physically, I feel great. I worked with a skating coach, Marc Power, as well as Barbara Underhill, who's a former world figure skating champion, to get ready for this season and it was great. They taught me so much and I'm really happy I worked with them. And my trainer back home, Cal, he and I worked really hard together, too, and it was a great summer.
Of course, the best thing about summer was marrying my beautiful wife, Janelle. We had a great time and it was just so nice to be around family and friends and have everyone there for you on that special day. It really was a beautiful day in Niagara-on-the-Lake and I couldn't have had a better time. We also enjoyed our honeymoon — we went to Hawaii and that was really nice to get away with her like that. It was a surprise trip for Janelle and I kept that a secret from her the whole summer. She didn't have a clue, so it was a good job by all who knew about it. I couldn't have asked for a better time with her and that place is definitely as advertised. It really was beautiful.
On Thursday, we all took part in the annual Bell/Senators Charity Golf event at Kanata Golf & Country Club. Our team wound up being champions, although I really had nothing to do with it. But it was neat ... I've never been on a championship golf team before, so that was pretty special for me and it was a lot of fun. But what we did in raising money for mental health care and for Project s.t.e.p. was amazing. It just goes to show you the kind of community we have here. That's why so many guys, myself especially, are so proud to be on this team. We get involved like that and it gives you a sense of belonging in this community. It's really great.
