Alex Grant on being acquired by Ottawa, joining Binghamton
The third and final trade made by the Sens around the trade deadline sent forward André Petersson to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenceman Alex Grant. Grant has since played a pair of games for the Binghamton Senators, recording a single point in that span, despite both games bringing losses for the B-Sens. I spoke with Grant about joining the Senators organization.
Here's what he had to say...
On finding out about the trade:
I was just sitting in my living room, my girlfriend was making a late lunch and the deadline was over for probably an hour at this point and then I got the phone call. I didn't think I was going to get traded anyway but for it to be an hour after was probably an even bigger shock. It was a bit of a surprise but I'm really looking forward to this opportunity, I think it's going to be a great opportunity. I'm joining a great team down here in Binghamton and the goal is obviously to be a part of Ottawa at some point.
On if getting traded is easier the second time:
The first one was kind of mutual both ways, I expected it and it was in the summer so it wasn't in season. This time was a little different having to pack up quickly and get on the move. It's part of hockey, it happens every year at the deadline and happens every year in the summer with guys so it's just something you've got to deal with. It's nice meeting more people.
On his transition to Binghamton:
I don't think it's going to be too hard, I've played against this team quite a bit in the past few years being with Wilkes-Barre and Norfolk, I know the faces and I know what they're like as players. There are a lot of good players, I'm just looking forward to joining such a highly skilled team. I'm just going to try and get the puck in the forwards' hands.
On playing against Binghamton:
They're so dangerous on line rushes and offensively they have a lot of guys who can score. They also have a deep checking team with a couple of solid checking lines that can shut down a team's top players. It's a good combination of skill and grit and it's just great to be a part of this team now.
On what he knew about the Ottawa Senators:
A fair bit, growing up my favourite team was Toronto — it's definitely not them anymore, they're the rival now, but I lived in Ottawa for four summers. I lived with my agent Larry Kelly for a bit and then another guy for a couple of summers, I trained at a Greco's. I'm a little familiar with the area and the team, I've skated at the Sensplex a few times so it's nice to be with this organization. It's nice knowing people in that city and knowing a bit of the city and it's definitely nice joining a Canadian team, it's my first time with a Canadian team, so that's always a little more special as well.
On the Antigonish connection with Paul MacLean:
In the summers I see him and I've talked to him. I know his family and his sons, I see him at the golf course a little bit.
On Luke Richardson:
They seem like great coaches. Obviously Luke had a great career in the NHL and he was a defenceman so it's nice playing for a guy like that who has been through it. Being a defenceman he's definitely going to have a lot of good things to help me with and help me along. The goal is to play in the NHL and he's definitely going to be a big help in that.
On the opportunity ahead:
I've just got to do what I've done up to this point for the most part. They wanted me and they traded for me so that's nice, but I've just got to try to be steady and consistent, bring lots to the table down here, be good defensively, move the puck and get in on the offence as well. If I get up there (Ottawa) do whatever it takes to stay, keep it simple and be effective.
On his style of play:
I'm an all-around defenceman, I'm not crazy offensive or crazy defensive but I feel like I can bring a little offence and a little defence. I'm not afraid to fight if I have to for teammates and things like that. I try to bring everything to the table and do whatever I can to help the team.
