David Legwand on joining the Senators

David Legwand spoke to the media via a conference call on Friday night and discussed his decision to come to Ottawa and play for the Sens.

Here's what he had to say...

On choosing Ottawa:

We had other options. I think Ottawa is a place where I liked the coaching staff, I played against Paul MacLean a lot when he was with Detroit and obviously with Jason Spezza leaving I thought it was a good fit for myself. Obviously they have a great group of young hockey players and they've got a top five defenceman in the League and guys up front like Clarke MacArthur, Kyle Turris, Bobby Ryan, Milan Michalek and those guys are great hockey players. It's an exciting time there and it should be a good season for us.

On what he brings:

I think I can take up the second line centre spot and play good minutes for the team and help out in all areas of the game. Whether it's the power play or penalty kill or 5-on-5 I think I can help and helping out with the young guys who are just coming in. They've got some solid prospects in their system that are up and coming too.

On Coach MacLean:

I think he's a great hockey person. He obviously won coach of the year for a reason and I think playing against him in Detroit, I think he had a lot to do with their success there.

On playing in a Canadian market:

That's something that always intrigued me. Being down in Nashville for 14 years that's something I never really got a chance to do. I think it'll be exciting being in a winter city and a cold city and a hockey market, I think it'll be pretty fun.

On why he waited to sign a contract:

I think you want to see everything that's out there and see who's where and what's what. That plays into it a little bit. I was waiting for the right situation for myself.

On if he thought Ottawa was a possible destination after the Spezza trade:

A little bit, obviously they had a spot to fill and needed someone to help out the team and can help them win hockey games. I think him leaving for Dallas created a space and it's a good fit.

On if he thinks they can contend for the playoffs:

Oh yeah, I think we can contend for the playoffs. That's got to be your goal is to get into the dance and then once you get in you never know what can happen. Obviously I'm excited to get there and have a chance to play in a Canadian market and get into the playoffs in a Canadian market is always exciting and I'm looking forward to it.

On if he spoke to any current or former Sens before signing:

I talked to a couple of them. I talked to Fish (Mike Fisher) this afternoon and he's happy that I chose Ottawa and then I talked to my old teammate Jason York who does some of that (media) stuff up there with you guys. They're all excited for me and I'm excited to be there.

On if he feels any pressure to replace Spezza's offence:

Obviously what Jason Spezza did in Ottawa is pretty remarkable, he's a point a game guy and a very rare offensive talent. I don't think you're going to fill his shoes. I'm going there to do some things that will help the overall game and those right types of things all around the ice and arena.
