Gord Wilson's Game Preview
4:20 PM: Jared Cowen shares his thoughts on what the Sens need to improve, the mood of the room and what has sustained them to this point in the year.
On what the team needs to improve:
I think it goes without saying that we need to take less penalties, uncalled for penalties when they're not even in our zone. There's penalties you can kill off where you just playing the puck, things happen, but there's unnecessary penalties where we're giving slashes or plays away from the puck. The penalty kill itself we just have to bear down and know what we're out there to do and do our job.On the danger of the Pens PP:
Everyone out there is a shooter for them, everyone is a good passer. Usually in the regular season there's only certain guys you deem as 'dangerous' but everyone out there for them is that kind of player. On the mood of the dressing room:
So far it's focused, everyone knows what needs to get done. Everyone feels good about our team and our chances and our ability to come back and play and do well compared to last game. Nobody is worried but we know there's a lot of urgency. On what has brought them this far:
It's our leadership, our depth in our organization, lots of guys have played well and filled roles we didn't think we could fill. The older guys on the team have really shown the way and a couple of younger guys as well. I don't think anything will change now, we'll just keep on doing what we've been doing the whole year.3:50 PM: Jason Spezza spoke about being reunited with Milan Michalek and Daniel Alfredsson as well as the focus of the team going into tonight.
It's a bit of mix and match and try to different combinations to see what helps us win. Being on the road, we'll get different matchups and hopefully by putting the three of us together we can find some old chemistry and have a good night. On the mood of the room:
Guys are excited for the challenge ahead of us. We know they're going to try and close us out tonight and we're going to try and give them our best game of the series. We know it's a good opportunity for us to play in a big game and we have our backs against the wall and we have to play our best hockey of the year.1:50 PM: Here is tonight's projected lineup based on morning line rushes. No confirmed lineup will be available until game time.
Michalek - Spezza - Alfredsson
Greening - Turris - Condra
Smith - Zibanejad - Silfverberg
Kassian/Conacher - Pageau - Neil
Methot - Karlsson
Cowen - Gonchar
Phillips - Benoit
We all have to respond, there's no individual that takes the blame here. It's a collective effort and it's a team effort. When the team plays well everyone has success and when the team doesn't play well obviously things don't look so good.On the importance of the response:
It's not what happens to you, it's what you do after, it's how you respond. For us, we need to respond and that's a collective effort. It's a team game and the better you play as a team the better result you usually have.On starting well:
We have to focus on doing things right. It starts with the first shift, the first minute of the game and we have to play like that, like we want to, for the whole game. As you've seen in this series when we don't play well for five or six minutes in a row the puck ends up in the net a few times. It's really a focus thing. We have to focus on playing well and playing well every shift. On if the team can elevate its game:
We all have to elevate our level and that's kind of where things are. You have to continue to get better. If we continue to get better I'm sure we'll be happy with the result. On the current level of play:
We haven't played very well. You don't give up seven goals by playing well, I'll tell you that right now. I think we have to get back to what gives us success and that's hardnosed hockey, taking away space and figuring out how to win games 2-0 or 2-1. That's how we've had success all year and that's our blueprint for winning. On using the Game 3 win as a blueprint:
We need to repeat that. We need to find a way to get back to giving ourselves an opportunity to win the game and that's all you can really ask. In order to do that you have to play hard, you have to play as a team, you have to play together and you have to limit the number of mistakes you make.11:30 AM: The Sens are on the ice in Pittsburgh...
