Another Monday means another installment of Memorable Monday. This time around, we’ll be taking a look at one of the most exciting finishes of the season — Colin Greening’s buzzer beater on February 23 to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The game featured two of the hottest teams in the NHL at the time. The Sens entered the big Saturday night tilt with their division rivals in the midst of a then-three game winning streak, while Toronto entered the contest having won seven of their last nine games.
In ironic retrospect given how the game played out, but much of the excitement prior to the game stemmed from the relationship between Greening and Leafs goaltender Ben Scrivens. The pair were teammates at Cornell and are both members of the Quill and Dagger society — not that they’re at liberty to discuss it.
Prior to the game, Colin spoke with Sens TV’s Gord Wilson. When asked about whether or not he’d pot one against his old Cornell buddy, Greening said, ”I hope so, it would give me bragging rights, definitely.”
Little did he know the goal he was hoping for would come with less than 30 seconds to play.
With a faceoff deep in the Toronto zone, Mika Zibanejad came up with a big faceoff win back to Patrick Wiercioch who put a low slapshot on goal. With the subsequent rebound trickling into the slot, Greening barged his way to the front of the net and tapped the bouncing puck past his old teammate to earn a victory with 23.4 seconds to play.
It capped a three point night for Greening who assisted the other two Sens goals in the 3-2 win.

The three point night capped a five point week for Greening and, looking back, offered a bit of foreshadowing for his eventual second round playoff outburst. He acted as the primary offensive catalyst for the Sens during their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, scoring three goals and four points in five games, including a dramatic game three overtime winner. He finished the season tied for fifth on the team in scoring with 19 points.
