OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray today announced the club has reached a long-term agreement with its first 50-goal scorer, left-winger Dany Heatley.
“This is a great agreement for Senators fans, Dany, the organization and NHL hockey in Ottawa for years to come,” said Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Senators. “Under the challenges of our current collective bargaining system, this agreement goes to show the quality of Bryan Murray and his management team to be able to put this agreement together to ensure long-term championship-level hockey in the nation’s capital.”
“We are all very happy and excited to get this deal done with an elite player in Dany Heatley who will be successful for quite a number of years,” said Senators general manager Bryan Murray. “It goes to show the commitment of ownership of having a first-class team in Ottawa for many years to come.”
In his second season with the Senators in 2006-07, and fifth in the NHL, Heatley became the first NHLer to record back-to-back 50-goal seasons since the Florida Panthers’ Pavel Bure (1999-2000, 2000-01). The 26-year-old had 50 goals and 53 assists in 2005-06 and 50 goals and 55 assists last season. He has played in every Senators regular-season (164) and playoff (30) game in the last two seasons.
Heatley joined the Senators on Aug. 23, 2005, in a trade from the Atlanta Thrashers for Marian Hossa and Greg de Vries.
After five seasons in the NHL, his first three with the Thrashers, Heatley has 180 goals, 209 assists and 292 penalty minutes in 354 regular-season games. He also has 10 goals, 24 assists and 25 penalty minutes in 30 post-season appearances.
Heatley was selected second overall by the Thrashers in the 2000 NHL entry draft after his first of two seasons of collegiate hockey with the University of Wisconsin Badgers. In 77 games with Wisconsin, he recorded 52 goals, 61 assists and 106 penalty minutes.
Born in Freiburg, Germany, the Calgary-raised Heatley has represented Canada in international competition eight times, winning the senior world championships in 2003 and 2004 and the World Cup in 2006.
