Robitaille still feeling the pain

Ray Emery is back in.

But Randy Robitaille might be out when the Ottawa Senators face the Sabres on Wednesday night at HSBC Arena in Buffalo (7:30 p.m., TSN, Team 1200).

The veteran centre left Monday night’s game against the Montreal Canadiens after taking a shot off his left hand. Robitaille’s hand remained sore Tuesday, and he didn’t take part in the Sens’ afternoon workout at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Head coach John Paddock said the swelling on Robitaille’s hand hadn’t gone down since Monday night, and it remained too sore for him to practice.

“He had X-rays (Monday) night, and it’s nothing but a bad bruise in the fleshy part of his hand,” said Paddock, who added a decision on whether he’ll face the Sabres won’t be made until Wednesday morning.

No such waiting game needed for Emery, who’ll make his fourth start of the season Wednesday night. It’s been nearly two weeks since Emery last saw some game action (Nov. 8 vs. Washington). Martin Gerber has made four straight starts since then, including Monday’s 4-2 victory over the Canadiens.

“Ray’s a pretty intense guy and has been practising good here in the last 4-5 days or a week,” said Paddock. “I think he’ll be fine.”

After wrapping up their three-game road trip against the Sabres, the Senators will return home to face Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night (7:30 p.m., Sens TV, Team 1200). It’s the teams’ first meeting since they faced off in the first round of the Stanley Cup last spring, a series won by the Senators in five games.

The Philadelphia Flyers provide the opposition for the Senators at Scotiabank Place on Saturday night (7 p.m., CBC, Team 1200).

Less than 200 tickets remain for both home games.
