Kelly staying with Senators
Call it one good Friday for Bryan Murray.

The Ottawa Senators general manager was beaming at Scotiabank Place after the team moved up three spots in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft to land prize defensive prospect Erik Karlsson.

Murray also had more good news: Forward Chris Kelly, a potential unrestricted free agent, has agreed to a new contract with the team. Kelly has blossomed into a valuable two-way player the past two seasons and Murray was anxious to keep him on board.

“We have an agreement,” said Murray, who didn’t disclose terms of the deal. “We (don’t) have a signed document yet, but we did agree we had the right numbers for each other and that he was satisfied and I was satisfied.

“Both parties wanted to get the deal done. We were able to convince (Kelly’s camp) that enough was good enough.”

Earlier Friday, the Senators placed goaltender Ray Emery on waivers. If he isn’t claimed by another team, Murray has a window until June 30 to buy out the remainder of Emery’s contact. What is certain is that he won’t be back with the team after a tumultuous season that came on the heels of backstopping the Senators to the Stanley Cup final in 2006-07.

“He’s just on waivers and when that period is over, we’ll have to do something,” said Murray. “I believe he’ll rebound, I believe he’ll play again in the National Hockey League and be a guy that, at the end of his career, looks back upon this as just a blip. He’ll be good for some (other) team.”
