Cyril Leeder honoured for contributions to community, charitable causes

Sens COO to receive Brian Kilrea Award
For the second time in four years, an Ottawa Senators executive will receive a prestigious honour at the Ottawa Celebrity Sports Dinner.

Senators and Scotiabank Place COO Cyril Leeder has been chosen to receive the Brian Kilrea Award, which recognizes the efforts of an Ottawa sports personality who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to community leadership and the advancement of charitable causes.

The award, named after the legendary Hall of Fame coach of the Ottawa 67’s, has been presented since 2005 by the Ottawa Citizen.

“I’m very honoured and grateful to be this year’s recipient of the Brian Kilrea Award,” said Leeder, who has been a part of the Senators organization since its return to the National Hockey League in 1992 and its COO since August 2002. “In my role with Senators Sports & Entertainment, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to be involved in many important community initiatives, projects and events.”

Leeder was instrumental in the drafting and presentation of the bid document to the NHL’s board of governors that led to the awarding of the current Senators franchise. He was also a founding member of the Ottawa Community Ice Partnership, which developed and built the Bell Sensplex in Kanata, and serves on the board of directors of the Sens Foundation. Leeder is also headed into his 10th year as chairman of the Bell Capital Cup, the world’s largest minor hockey tournament, which runs this year from Dec. 28-Jan. 1.

In the coming months, he will serve as vice-chairman of two major sporting events at Scotiabank Place: The 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2009 CIS men’s basketball championship.

Senators president and CEO Roy Mlakar, a previous recipient of the Brian Kilrea Award, called the honour “one of the most cherished awards in my career, as it is not only named after a legend and Hall of Fame coach, but a quality person in Brian Kilrea.”

“I am sure Cyril is honoured and we as an organization are very proud of him in receiving this year’s award.”

Leeder will be presented with the award during the 11th annual Ottawa Celebrity Sports Dinner, to be held at the Civic Centre salons on Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Funds raised by the dinner continue to support the Soloway Jewish Community Centre and the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.
