Swede payoff for Sens owner
Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson (right), shown alongside Dany Heatley at practice today, wore a Team Canada jersey to make good on a bet with owner Eugene Melnyk over the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship final. Canada beat Sweden 5-1 in Ottawa.
Daniel Alfredsson won't be feeling comfortable in a Team Canada jersey any time soon.

For the second straight year, the Senators captain wore Canadian colours during a team practice to make good on a bet with Ottawa owner Eugene Melnyk. Alfredsson, a proud Swede, wagered that the Tre Kronor would come through with a victory in the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship gold-medal game played Jan. 5 at Scotiabank Place.

For the second straight year, Canada prevailed, this time by a 5-1 count.

"It's great to see how honourable he is in paying his bets," a pleased Melnyk said after watching his captain skate around the Kanata Recreation Complex ice in a white Team Canada jersey. "We made a bet last year and he wore the jersey after Team Canada won and it happened again this year.

"Listen, the guy's just paying off a bet. It's all for fun and hopefully we do it again next year."

Alfredsson said he'd be more than willing to roll the dice on being third time lucky.

"I think Sweden, especially the last two years, has done a great job getting back at the top (at the world juniors)," he said. "We hadn't been in the medal round in previous years, so it's been a great showing for them. I'm definitely going to bet on them."

Even though he spends most of his time in Ottawa now, Alfredsson admitted Team Canada's colours will never truly suit him.

"There's a lot of pride in Team Canada here," he said. "There's no question there's a lot of history. But it definitely doesn't feel like me."
