Spezza teeing it up for charity
One more time, Jason Spezza and a few of his friends will hit the links for some good times and a good cause.

The fourth annual Direct Energy Jason Spezza Celebrity Classic, presented by American Express, is set to tee off Monday at Greyhawk Golf Club in Cumberland. More than 200 golfers will be on hand to help raise money for the Sens Foundation in support of Ronald McDonald House and Roger's House. The tournament has raised just under $200,000 in its first three years.

"It's been a success. It's sold out every year and we've made lots of money for charity," said Spezza, the Ottawa Senators centre who started up the event that bears his name back in 2006.

"I just wanted to do something in the community and give back a little bit to the community. Lots of people like golf, so it was kind of a natural fit and a way to raise money for charity."

Besides Spezza, other Senators players scheduled to take part in the tourney are Chris Neil, Chris Kelly, Shean Donovan and Jesse Winchester. Brendan Bell, who played for the Sens last season and is now an unrestricted free agent, is also in the field.

Many of those who will tee it up on Monday have been regulars at this event since it started.

"So far, it's been great," said Spezza. "Everyone that came out the first year has been out all three years. I think people have received it well. Not many people who have played in it once have dropped out."

Besides the title sponsor, Spezza said Jubilee Fine Jewellers "contributes quite a bit, too."

"I think everybody enjoys the day and we've had great weather and ClubLink does a really good job of hosting it," he added.

The day begins with a breakfast at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start for the tournament at 10 a.m. A cocktail reception and silent auction follows at 3 p.m., then a dinner closes the event out.
