Bulletin: Ottawa Dragon Boat Paddlers to Raise Funds for Roger's House
Senators' Mike Fisher to serve as honorary chair of the festival
OTTAWA - For the 13th year, the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation, through the Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival, continues its fundraising tradition for local charities by setting a goal of $250,000 for this summer's event and pledging $50,000 for Roger's House. The Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation and Ottawa Senators Foundation also announced that Senators centre Mike Fisher would serve as honorary chair of the 2006 event.
"We have raised over $800,000 for local charities in the past seven years through the Nortel Dragon Boat Race Festival, and this year we look to bring our total to over a million dollars," said Warren Creates, member of the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation board of directors. "We are also pleased to name Roger's House as our tier 1 recipient for 2006, starting with a pledge of at least $50,000 to their cause. The Ottawa Senators Foundation is such an important member of our community, and through their work in bringing Roger's House to reality, they continue to improve the quality of life of our youth."
Creates also noted Fisher's involvement in Roger's House and the 2006 Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival. "It's a pleasure and honour to welcome Mike to our event," he said. "His involvement in Roger's House since the beginning as honorary chair and key supporter has proved him to be a role model."
"It's an honour for me to accept the position of honorary chair for the Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival," said Fisher. "Your past and ongoing support our community's charities has strengthened the city of Ottawa. An especially warm thanks for choosing Roger's House as a charitable recipient this year. With our doors set to open this spring, your contributions will go a long way to support the excellence of care that will be delivered to families in our community."
Roger's House, was built to honour the memory of Roger Neilson, the beloved assistant coach of the Ottawa Senators who died after a long battle with cancer. Roger's House is located on the grounds of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). It provides pediatric palliative care with the objective of enhancing the comfort and quality of life for children and their families. It is expected to open in May 2006.
The Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival, which will be held June 24 and 25, 2006, at Mooney's Bay, is a celebration of community, cultural diversity, sport and teamwork. Now in its 13th year, it has become one of Ottawa's leading summer events. More than 180 teams - 4,500 paddlers -- raise funds for four local charities.
