Bulletin: Senators sign Gerber and Corvo

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager John Muckler announced today the signing of goaltender Martin Gerber and defenceman Joe Corvo to multi-year agreements.

MARTIN GERBER: Winner of the 2006 Stanley Cup, Martin Gerber comes to the Senators for his fourth NHL season in 2006-07. After finishing fourth in the NHL with 38 wins during the 2005-06 regular season, he played in six playoff games.. He earned a win and a loss in post-season action, but fell ill early in the first round against the Montreal Canadiens and then served as back-up to Cam Ward. He did earn a shutout in Game 4 on May 24 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Buffalo Sabres.

The 31-year-old Swiss played a total of 60 regular-season games in 2005-06, recording 38 wins, 14 losses and six overtime losses for a goals-against average of 2.78. Gerber also set a Carolina franchise record for wins in one season.

Gerber represented his country at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, holding a 4.13 goals-against average in three games for Switzerland. He also played for Switzerland at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City.

Gerber was originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the eighth round, 232nd overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He played two seasons in Anaheim before being traded to Carolina on June 18, 2004, for Tomas Malec and a third-round draft pick in 2004.

Before joining Anaheim for his first NHL season in 2002-03, Gerber played five seasons for SC Langnau in Switzerland from 1996-97 to 2000-01. In 2001-02, he moved to Farjestad of the Swedish elite league and helped them capture the Sweden's league championship, earning a 1.64 goals-against average and two shutouts in 10 playoff games.

JOE CORVO: Corvo, 29, has been in the Los Angeles Kings organization since his fourth-round selection, 83rd overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. With the exception of the lockout season in 2004-05, he has played the last three seasons in the NHL, recording 27 goals, 50 assists and 88 penalty minutes over 203 games.

In 2005-06, Corvo recorded career highs with 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points in 81 games. He played the most games of any King, and led defencemen in plus-minus with +15. He was second on the team in shots (190) and half of this goals came on the power play. Corvo scored on his first career penalty shot on Detroit Red Wing Jimmy Howard on Nov. 28.

After being drafted by the Kings in the fourth round of the 1997 draft, the Illinois native played 50 games in 1998-99 for the Kings' AHL affiliate in Springfield, Mass. Corvo was the third-leading scorer amongst defencemen for the AHL's Lowell franchise in 2000-01 with 10 goals and 23 assists. The following season, he stood second on the team in Manchester (AHL) and first amongst defencemen with 50 points (13-37).

In his first full season in the NHL in 2003-04, Corvo tied Lubomir Visnovsky for most goals by a Kings defenceman with eight, with three of them game-winners, including his first career overtime goal on Jan. 28, 2004, against Anaheim.

Corvo played part of the 2004-05 season for the AHL's Chicago Wolves, recording seven goals and as many assist in 23 games. Appearing in all 18 post-season games for the Wolves, Chicago lost in the Calder Cup finals to the Philadelphia Phantoms.
