Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson is among a growing list of Senators players participating in scrimmages at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata, Ont., over the past couple of weeks. On a day when Sens newcomer Joe Corvo joined the group earlier this week, Alfredsson reflected on the changes general manager John Muckler has made to the roster this off-season.

"We've made some good additions. We've added guys with speed, great mobility and puck-moving ability, as well as a strong goaltender in Martin Gerber."

Despite having tremendous success after new rules implemented by the NHL opened up the game, Alfredsson says other areas remain important. It's not all about speed and mobility.

"If you look at teams that were successful last year, you have to be balanced," he says. "You have to have four lines that can play. Speed is key, but you have to be able to be mobile, forecheck, backcheck and other things. With the changes here, we'll have to work to click together, build some chemistry and give ourselves a chance of winning the Stanley Cup."

After a record-setting 2005-06 season - Alfredsson tied Dany Heatley with 103 points for the highest total in Senators history - the off-season has also been memorable for the 34-year-old. Alfredsson and his wife, Birgitta, welcomed their second son, Loui who was born on June 21. The couple's first son is named Hugo.

Alfredsson cracks a big smile when talking about the birth of his children.

"It's a very special feeling. There's no doubt that there's no other feeling like that. It's been a great summer for us. We're all very happy, and it has been lots of fun."

This summer, Alfredsson was also able to return home to Sweden for nine days and finally spend some time with a few of his compatriots whom he played with during Sweden's gold-medal championship at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

"It was nice to go home and see family and friends," he says. "I had dinner with a few of my Olympic teammates and coaches, too. I hadn't been to Sweden since we had about a 12-hour stretch after winning the gold. We never really celebrated, so it was nice to be able to go back and talk about it."

During the trip, Alfredsson took part in the NHLPA's European Player Meeting in Stockholm, where he was re-elected vice-president on the interim executive committee.
