When Dean McAmmond explored potential suitors as a member of the free agent market during the off-season, it was important for him to sign with a winning team. After conferring with his family and his agent, the Ottawa Senators turned out to be a logical decision.

"I'm coming into a team situation where they were first in the East (Eastern Conference) last season," McAmmond says. "They had a disappointing playoffs, but, of course, we're looking to change that. A lot of camps I've been to, the team was just looking to make the playoffs. They seem more comfortable here. It came to a point for me where I just wanted to be with a good organization and a good team. I thought this was a good fit."

While the speedy forward says he and his family - including wife Karla and children Ashlyn, 15, Morgann, 5, Braeden, 4, and Teghan, 2 - enjoyed their year in St. Louis last season when McAmmond skated with the Blues, they have embraced their new home in Ottawa.

"So far it's gone well. It's not as big or busy here as it is in St. Louis."

During the summer months the family retreats to their cottage in British Columbia where McAmmond says simply relaxing with his children is the primary source of recreation.

"It's rewarding to see the kids happy, thriving and enjoying their days."

During the start of training camp, McAmmond has been skating on a line with Chris Kelly and Brian McGrattan. Both of his current linemates participated in their rookie campaigns in the NHL in 2005-06. A 14-year veteran, McAmmond feels youth should serve the Senators well.

"It's pretty early for me to assess things, but I see a team that is young and has a high amount of upside and potential. There's a lot of skill here."
