Corvo makes Sens debut Thursday
Defenceman Joe Corvo hopes to add a spark to the Senators power play when he makes his regular-season debut on Thursday.

by Todd Anderson

Defenceman Joe Corvo will make his regular-season debut with the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night at Scotiabank Place.

The 29-year-old, who is returning to action after fracturing his right foot in the pre-season, will be in the lineup against the Colorado Avalanche, a team he faced 11 times during his first three seasons in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings.

He's excited to finally get his first taste of regular-season action with his new team.

"(Sitting out) is tough mentally. You want to be a part of the team and you want to help out. It's nice to get the first game against a team I played a lot before."

With his speed and powerful shot, Corvo feels he could help a struggling Senators power play.

"It's a different look. Maybe the guys will be excited to have a different shot out there. I hope I add a spark."

This morning at practice Senators head coach Bryan Murray had Corvo manning the point during power-play drills with Wade Redden, along with forwards Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley. He likes the prospects of what Corvo can do for the team.

"From the beginning, we have liked his shot. We saw in training camp that he's a competitive and a hard-working guy," Murrary says. "He retrieves the puck very well in his own zone and he makes that first pass very well. We're hoping he'll make more offence out of our back end. The real priority for bringing him here was to help with the power play. Any team that kills penalties against us is going to have to respect what he brings at the top of the (offensive zone). That should help (create more space and opportunities) down low, where we're not playing that well."
