Ottawa Senators goaltender Martin Gerber will face his former teammates for the second time this season when he starts against the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C., tomorrow.

"I'm looking forward to it, definitely," Gerber said after practice today in Tampa before the team left for Raleigh. "I'm going to take it day-by day, shot-by shot and keep trying to move forward."

Ray Emery has started the last seven games in goal for Ottawa, while Gerber has worked hard in practice. Gerber spoke about what he has been focusing on lately.

"A lot of things, positioning things mainly," Gerber said. "Basically it was just hard work and trying to work to get a foundation where you're more confident."

Senators head coach Bryan Murray is impressed with what he's seen recently from this summer's free-agent acquisition.

"Watching him practise, he looks a lot better," Murray said of Gerber. "He looks more poised and confident. I think there are two things that have to happen here. Ray gets a day where he can sit on the bench and watch a game and get refocused, and Martin gets a chance to get back in. He's done lots of work. He comes out early (to practice), he stays late. Ronnie (Senators goaltending coach Ron Low) has worked with him and talked to him."

So what has impressed Murray most about Gerber?

"No. 1, I think he's out of the net a little more," Murray said. "He was back on the goal-line when he was playing regularly and things weren't happening for him. No. 2, it looks to me like he's being square to the puck now. Watching him today in practice, I thought he was pretty good on every angle shot, which was a little bit of a difficult thing for him earlier on."
