Bulletin: Melnyk Family Skate for Kids a Success

OTTAWA - For the third consecutive year, Eugene Melnyk and his family, in partnership with the Children and Youth Friendly Ottawa (CAYFO), hosted 100 children today at Scotiabank Place.

The children were greeted by Eugene Melnyk and his family before kicking off the festivities with a holiday skate on the ice at Scotiabank Place. The kids then took part in a luncheon with the Melnyk's at the Silver Seven Brewhouse.

In the spirit of the upcoming holidays, the Melnyk family generously donated a Senators jersey, a Senators helmet, a brand new pair of skates and a Senators lootbag to each of the 100 participating children.

"This has become an event that my family and I look forward to each December," said Melnyk. "Many of these children have never been to Scotiabank Place. To see how much joy they get from the experience of skating on the same ice as their Senators is such a heart-warming experience. I can't think of a better way to kick off the holiday season."

"The true spirit of giving is when we provide a young person in need with the opportunity to do something that so many children take for granted," explained David Millen, CAYFO executive director. "Some of the young people who received skates from Mr. Melnyk and his family have never owned anything new in their lives and many have never skated at the local rink or arena. At Child and Youth Friendly Ottawa, we are happy to play a small part in such a generous program."

"Too many children in Ottawa do without such things as skates - 1 in 5 lives below the poverty line," said Max Keeping, honorary chair of the Ottawa Senators Foundation. "Mr. Melnyk fulfils the dreams for 100 of those children. I so much admire his generosity and his ongoing support of our community."

CAYFO is a dynamic not-for-profit youth organization that has focused its attention on providing the very best services to the young people of Canada's capital city since 1997. It works on the promotion of youth engagement and volunteering, and manages some of the best youth awards programs, youth leadership programs and conferences in Canada. It has also spearheaded innovative anti-bullying and victimization projects, helped children at risk, bridged the generations, promoted partnerships, encouraged young people to excel and celebrated this excellence.
