Bulletin: Ottawa Senators and Algonquin College Present the Brian Kilrea Leadership Bursary

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, Algonquin College and their respective foundations announced today a new bursary endowment fund named in honour of Brian Kilrea for his commitment to the community, inspiration to young athletes, and dedication and contribution to the game of hockey.

The Brian Kilrea Leadership Bursary, in excess of $3,000 a year, will be awarded in perpetuity to a student of Algonquin College's sports business management program.

"Brian is known for guiding sportsmen, both on and off the ice," said Roy Mlakar, Senators president and chief executive officer. "Through this bursary, our future sports managers will continue to be influenced by Brian and his exemplary community leadership."

Since his first game behind the Ottawa 67's bench on Sept. 27, 1974, Kilrea's 30-plus years of coaching have seen him become the all-time leader for wins (1,116) in the Canadian Hockey League, win two Memorial Cup victories, inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 2003, and, just yesterday (Friday, Feb. 2), coach his 2,000th major junior game.

"On behalf of all fans in Hockey Country, we are proud to present the Brian Kilrea Leadership Bursary with pride that his legacy will last forever," added Mlakar.

The Ottawa Senators family was especially pleased to be a part of Kilrea's 2,001st game, when he and the 67's faced off against the Toronto St. Michael's Majors this afternoon at Scotiabank Place.
