Neil gets power-play opportunity
Senators forward Chris Neil's desire to create traffic in front of opposing nets is leading to more power-play opportunities.

by Todd Anderson

Not only did Chris Neil make a great play to set up Chris Phillips' opening goal in a 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens last night, but he also provided a spark to the club's power play.

Coach Bryan Murray called upon the rugged veteran to try and create some traffic in front of the opposing net, and Neil obliged.

"Not only did he do that, he also retrieved pucks for us as well," Murray said after practice today. "Chris is a physical kid, a character kid. When we get the puck in the offensive zone, we know Chris will go to the net. When the other team dumps the puck in (the Senators' zone), we know he'll make a hit."

Today Neil skated on a line with Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza. While Murray likes what he saw after reuniting Heatley and Spezza together last night, he says the third member of the line could alternate. Neil won't necessarily be with the pair tomorrow when the club visits Montreal.

"It may be a variety of guys who play there, it depends on who we're playing," Murray said, looking ahead to the remainder of the season. "It might be Patrick Eaves, Chris Neil or Mike Comrie."
