Bulletin: Sens Army Captain to be Crowned for Hockey Night in Barbados Contest when Ottawa Hosts Carolina Tonight
OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators will close out their three-month Hockey Night in Barbados contest on Wednesday, Feb. 28, when they host the Carolina Hurricanes during a specially themed salute to Barbados at Scotiabank Place. Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and his fellow judges will crown one of three finalists as Sens Army Captain. The winner will receive a special dream vacation for two to Barbados from March 7 to 11, 2007.
Melnyk will be joined by judges Bert Inniss, founder of Bert's in Barbados, and Sandy Sharkey, co-host on 93.9 BOB FM's The Morning After, as they choose a winner from among finalists Beth Evans, Ryan Guthrie and Shawn Uhrich. The three were among hundreds who submitted video clips showcasing their team spirit around the theme of Hockey Night in Barbados. Senators fans determined the finalists through online voting and in-game text messaging in January and February.
"The enthusiasm and response generated by this promotion is a reminder to all that, here in Ottawa, we have the best fans in the league," Melnyk said. "Each and every game, we find unique ways to celebrate our fans, and tonight's game is no exception. I'm looking forward to the challenge of deciding who gets to join me in Barbados at Bert's."
The finalists, along with the panel of judges, will watch the Senators take on the Hurricanes in suite 111, which will be transformed into Bert's for the evening. Scotiabank Place will be dressed with Bajan décor at all three entrances, and the first 5,000 fans will receive a mini Barbados flag.
Prior to the game, the Barbados High Commission and the Barbados Tourism Authority will join Melnyk in hosting a reception for special guests. "Mr. Melnyk continues to be a great ambassador for Barbados, and this promotion has been a great partnership between him, Barbados and Canada," said Barbados High Commissioner Glyne Murray. "Since it started three months ago, we have seen many Sens fans travel to Barbados to experience its genuine warmth and hospitality."
The Sens Army Captain will win a trip for two to Barbados from March 7 to 11, 2007, including airfare and hotel accommodation for four nights. On Thursday, March 8, the Sens Army Captain will join Melnyk and Inniss at Bert's to cheer on the Sens in the Battle of Ontario when they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Ottawa Senators Hockey Club would like to extend a special thanks to all of the contest sponsors, including the Barbados Tourism Authority, the Barbados Tourism Development Corporation, the Ottawa Citizen, the Accra Beach Hotel & Resort, Cool Runnings, Island Safari, Bert's, 93.9 BOB.FM and Team 1200.
