Gerber, Sens ground Flyers

LONDON, Ont. – Martin Gerber and the Ottawa Senators couldn’t have asked for a better start to their pre-season schedule.

Gerber stopped all 52 shots he faced Tuesday night as the Senators blanked the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 at the John Labatt Centre.

The Senators gave Gerber plenty of offensive support, building a 3-0 lead through the first period. Patrick Eaves added a fourth goal for Ottawa at the 9:57 mark of the third.

“We came out really strong in the first period and that was key for us,” Gerber told Rogers Television.

“It was fun to see, fun to play and we kept building from there.”

Rookie winger Nick Foligno, who’s battling to earn a spot with the big club to start the season, made an impressive statement against the Flyers. He scored the Senators’ third goal 44 seconds before the end of the first period, and also added a pair of assists.

Eaves also added an assist, and Chris Kelly had a pair of helpers.

Another rookie, Ilya Zubov, opened the scoring for the Senators 7:37 into the first period.

Andrej Meszaros pushed the Sens’ advantage to 2-0 at 16:14, notching the first of two straight Ottawa power-play goals.

The Flyers finished with a 52-39 edge in shots on goal, but couldn’t get a puck past Gerber, who was sharp all night.

Defenceman Matt Carkner (left hand) left the game in the first period and did not return. He’ll be evaluated on Wednesday. The Senators also saw winger Dean McAmmond (groin) depart from the game in the second period.

The Senators make their home-ice debut on Thursday night, facing the Washington Capitals at Scotiabank Place. It’s a 7 p.m. start.
