Bulletin: 4th Annual Canadian Forces Appreciation Night
Senators to host 2,600 Canadian Forces members and their families on Jan. 17

OTTAWA
– Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Ottawa Senators and Scotiabank Place, announced today that for the fourth consecutive season since taking ownership of the club, the Senators will dedicate a game to recognize the Canadian Forces (CF) on Thursday, Jan. 17, when the Carolina Hurricanes visit Ottawa.

The Senators will host the fourth annual Canadian Forces Appreciation Night for more than 2,600 Canadian Forces members and their families, thanks to the generosity of the CF supporters and Senators fans. More than 1,300 tickets were provided through the CF Appreciation Night supporters and another 1,300 was received from the Ottawa Senators Tickets for Troops campaign.

"The Ottawa Senators are proud to recognize the Canadian Forces," said Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Ottawa Senators and Scotiabank Place. "We honour them for their dedication, courage and professionalism in representing all Canadians as they work to bring peace and democracy to other less fortunate countries."

"It is absolutely incredible and overwhelming to see how the Senators hockey organization, along with their fans and corporate partners, were able to come up with such an incredible show of support towards the men and women who serve in their local community,” said Lt.-Gen. Walter Natynczyk, vice-chief of the defence staff. “On behalf of all Canadian Forces members, both here and abroad, I want to thank the Ottawa Senators organization for their tremendous display of leadership and generosity."

PRE-GAME ACTIVITIES: The game opens with the Canadian and American national anthems sung by O.P.P. Constable Lyndon Slewidge, accompanied by 20 members of the the Canadian Forces Central Band and Flag Party. Melnyk will be joined for the ceremonial face-off by Lt.-Gen. Natynczyk and his family.

IN-GAME ACTIVITIES: Throughout the game, the videoboard will show messages from members of HMCS Ottawa and Canadian Forces in Afghanistan. The Canadian Forces Personnel Support Agency (CFPSA) will operate a kiosk on the arena’s 200 level, selling Support our Troops merchandise.

In the first intermission, four Canadian Forces families will participate in a face-off competition. During the second intermission, nine Canadian Forces hockey players from the Army, Navy and Air Force will compete in the Hockey Country Showdown skills competition.

RED GEAR, RIBBONS AND T-SHIRTS: All fans in attendance at the game are encouraged to wear red in support of the troops, while all Senators players will be sporting a Support our Troops ribbon on their helmets. Sensations at Scotiabank Place will also be selling specially produced camouflage T-shirts for $25, with proceeds donated to the Military Families Fund (MFF). The fund was created in April 2007 as an agile and responsive means to provide support to military families (www.cfpsa.com/mfamily/).

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: At 6 p.m. on Thursday in the Coliseum Rooms (located at lower level Gate 2), the Senators’ owner and Dave Ready, president of the Sens Foundation, will present Robert Gillett, president of Algonquin College, and Lt.-Gen. Natynczyk a cheque in the amount of $100,000 to establish the Sens Foundation MFF Educational Endowment Fund. These funds, raised in partnership with the CF premier supporters, will assist families and children of CF members to attend any campus of Algonquin College.

CANADIAN FORCES: Canadian Forces members are proud to serve Canada by defending its values, interests and sovereignty at home and abroad. The Ticket for Troops program honours Canadian Forces members for their dedication towards our country. On any given day, about 8,000 Canadian Forces members   one third of its deployable force   are preparing for, engage in or are returning from an overseas mission.
