Sens rookies rout Leafs in finale
KITCHENER, Ont. – Thanks in great part to a second-period offensive eruption, the Ottawa Senators ended their rookie tournament on a high note Thursday night.

The Sens rolled past the Toronto Maple Leafs prospects 7-1 to finish the tourney with a 2-1-0 record, the same as the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins. The host Leafs went 0-2-1.

Greg Schira opened the scoring for the Senators just 10 seconds after the opening whistle. That was it for the offence until the second period, when Ottawa held a 20-5 edge in shots and pumped six more goals past Leafs goaltender James Reimer.

Erik Condra had a pair of goals in the middle frame for Ottawa, one on the power play and the second on a 3-on-1 shorthanded breakaway. Brandon Svensen, Zack Smith, Shea Guthie and Keegan Dansereau, with his fourth goal of the tournament, also hit the scoresheet for the Senators.

Leafs goaltender Andrew Engelage stopped Condra on a breakaway in the third period, foiling his shot at a hat trick.

Ottawa wound up outshooting the Leafs 45-27. A third-period goal by Tyler Bozak spoiled Senators goaltender Robin Lehner's bid for a shutout.

"I was really happy with the way we used our assets tonight," said Binghamton Senators head coach Don Nachbaur, who was behind the bench for Ottawa in the tournament. "I thought our speed was a big difference in the game. We managed to capitalize on our chances. Had we done that against Boston (a 4-3 loss on Wednesday), we would have been 3-0."

Now a number of the Senators rookies will head off to the team's main training camp, which opens on Saturday at Scotiabank Place.
