His many fans have surely taken notice of Mike Fisher's improved offensive production so far this season.

Now the National Hockey League has, too.

The hard-working Ottawa Senators centre has been named the league's third star of the week for the period concluding on Sunday. In three straight home-ice victories, Fisher collected six points (two goals, four assists), posted a +5 rating and won 65.5 per cent of his faceoffs (36-for-55). Both goals, including the game-winner, were scored in a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"It’s a first for me," a grinning Fisher said about the NHL recognition. "It’s a nice honour, for sure."

With nine goals and 20 points in 20 games, Fisher is already well on his way to erasing the memory of the 2008-09 season, when he produced just 13 goals and 32 points -- his lowest totals in more than seven years.

"He’s been dominating at times out there," Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said of his current linemate. "He does it all. He takes important faceoffs, he kills penalties, he plays on the power play. He’s an energy guy every night. He’s definitely been outstanding for us."

Senators head coach Cory Clouston agreed Fisher's honour is one that is well deserved.

"He’s played with different guys at different times of the year but his game hasn’t changed," said Clouston. "I think that’s the most important thing. If he just continues to play the way he does, he complements whoever is on his line."

Team guy that he is, Fisher prefers to spread around some of the credit for his early-season offensive success.

"I feel good with the puck and for whatever reason, it’s been better offensively," he said. "A lot of it is our team play and how the team has been playing. My linemates have been great. A lot people on our team deserve credit (for this)."

San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton and goaltender Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens were selected as the week's first and second stars, respectively.
