Bulldogs spoil Lehner\'s return to Binghamton net

MONTREAL — Robin Lehner didn't need much time to shake off the cobwebs.

In his first start in more than a month, the Binghamton Senators netminder was tested early and often in a 5-2 loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs in their American Hockey League matchup Friday night, played before 13,267 at the Bell Centre.

Yannick Weber's goal with 7:32 to play snapped a 2-2 tie and proved to be the winner for North Division-leading Bulldogs (7-1-1-2), who sealed matters with a pair of empty-net goals by Andreas Engqvist and David Desharmais in the final minute.

That the B-Sens (4-4-1-1) were in the game was a testament to the play of Lehner, who was returned to Binghamton by the Ottawa Senators earlier this week after spending most of October with the big club as a backup to Brian Elliott while Pascal Leclaire was sidelined with a pulled groin.

Hamilton outshot the B-Sens 16-1 in the first period but only Mathieu Carle, at the 11:45 mark, was able to solve Lehner. Jim O'Brien pulled Binghamton even at 1-1 with his fourth goal of the season 3:51 into the second period, but Ryan White restored the Bulldogs' lead three minutes later.

Andre Benoit, on the power play, squared matter for the B-Sens with his first of the season just 1:25 into the third period. But that was it for the Binghamton scoring on this night.

Hamilton finished with a 39-25 edge in shots on goal.

The two teams are slated to meet again Nov. 26 at Scotiabank Place.
