Bulletin: Senators pledge $250,000 towards Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence
OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators, in partnership with the Sens Foundation, announced today the organization have committed to donate $250,000 to the Algonquin College Foundation over the next five years to help fund the college’s Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence.

The Sens Foundation will match the Senators’ annual contribution of $25,000, bringing the total to $50,000 that will be donated each year. The first donation will be made by the Senators and the Sens Foundation as part of Algonquin College Construction Night, which will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 9, when the Senators host the Atlanta Thrashers at Scotiabank Place. Hundreds of Algonquin College students will be on hand for the first annual event, which is co-sponsored by Mynott Construction, Crain and Schooley Financial Corporation, De Marinis Inc., Morley Hoppner Group, PCL Constructors Canada Inc., Praxair Distribution, Total HVAC, Wolseley Canada and KOTT Lumber.

The $79-million Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) is on schedule to open in 2011. The 180,000-square-foot facility will be a state-of-the-art building for construction trades training. This new integrated learning centre will provide space for thousands of students studying in construction-related programs and will help address the current skills shortage in the construction industry in eastern Ontario. When complete, the ACCE will be visually and functionally different as it aims to be the largest building in Canada to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certified. The uniquely green centre will be a showcase and teaching laboratory for best practices in sustainable construction. The centre will add 600 new construction trades spaces and will become home to 2,500 full-time and 5,000 part-time registrants.

“We’re happy to continue our ongoing partnership with Algonquin College and are excited to contribute toward the new Centre for Construction Excellence, ” said Senators president Cyril Leeder. “Over the years, the Senators have received tremendous support from the construction industry. Whether it was building Scotiabank Place, donating time and material to the building of Roger’s House, or as season-seat holders and sponsors of the hockey club, the construction community has always been there for us. We feel that this is our opportunity to invest in the youth of our community and also to say thank you to the construction community.”

“The relationship between Algonquin College and the Senators organization has deep roots, and we are immensely appreciative and proud of the support provided by the Sens, and that of the entire construction industry and community partners, towards the creation of our new Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence,” said Claude Brulé, dean of the faculty of technology and trades at Algonquin College. “This centre will fulfill our vision of being a leading institution that attracts young people and prepares them for exciting careers in an innovative and vibrant construction sector.”
