OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators today recalled forward Jim O’Brien from the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators. This will be the first National Hockey League recall for the native of Maplewood, Minn., who was Ottawa’s first-round pick (29th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

O’Brien, 21, has recorded 12 goals, 13 assists, 27 penalty minutes and is a +10 in 33 games with the B-Sens this season. The goals and points totals have both surpassed his marks from his AHL rookie season in 2009-10, when he scored eight goals and added nine assists in 76 games. O’Brien made his AHL debut at the end of the 2008-09 season, recording one assist in six games.

Prior to joining Binghamton, O’Brien played two seasons with the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds, where he scored 48 goals and added 69 assists for 117 points in 133 regular-season games. O’Brien also represented the United States at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship held in Ottawa, scoring one goal and adding three assists in six games.

O’Brien spent one season with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers in 2006-07, where he was the youngest player in all of Division I college hockey. After recording seven goals and eight assists in 43 games with the Golden Gophers, O’Brien added seven points (three goals and four assists) in seven games for the United States, who captured silver at the 2007 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.
