BOSTON — Daniel Alfredsson is "at least a week" away from returning to the Ottawa Senators lineup.

Senators general manager Bryan Murray confirmed today that the team captain suffered a concussion when he took a blow to the head from Wojtek Wolski of the Rangers during their matchup Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Alfredsson was helped from the ice on the play and hasn't seen any game action since. He didn't travel with the team to Boston, where the Senators will face off against the Stanley Cup champion Bruins on Tuesday night at TD Garden (7 p.m., TSN, Team 1200).

"At this moment, I guess it’s a concussion," Murray told reporters shortly after the team landed in Beantown. "He doesn’t have headaches today and they think it’ll be something that — if a concussion ever clears up fairly quickly — he will probably recover from in the next few days. He will be out for at least a week."

National Hockey League disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan didn't deem the Wolski hit worthy of a suspension, a decision that didn't sit well with Murray.

"I told (Shanahan) I didn’t agree, that (Wolski) did go out of his way a little to make contact, that it was an elbow that was involved in the play," said Murray. "An elbow to the head … I was under the impression there would be a suspension. Since our player was hurt in that particular incident, I can’t agree with the ruling."

Now the Senators must soldier on through the next few games, at least, without someone Murray called "a very important player for us." But given Ottawa's six-game winning streak — currently the longest in the NHL — and the way some of the team's younger players have stepped up in recent games, he's confident the Senators can find a way to keep prospering without their leader.

"(Alfredsson) is the captain of the team, he’s one of our better players," said Murray. "We don’t have a lot of players at the moment that are NHL experienced to the level he’s at, so we’ll miss that. Hopefully, we’ll have people who’ll step in and have a chance (to contribute). We’ve got Bobby Butler coming back, we’ve got (Nikita) Filatov to play some games here and, hopefully, they'll take that opportunity and run with it."

Surgery brings Daugavins back to Binghamton

One day after notching his first career NHL goal, Kaspars Daugavins is back with the Binghamton Senators. Not that the parent club in Ottawa wants it that way, however.

The 23-year-old Latvian forward, whose third-period tally was the game-winner as the Senators edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Sunday night, is back in Binghamton for a previiously scheduled dental surgery. He'll have four wisdom teeth removed Tuesday, but Murray suggested a return to Ottawa is almost certainly in the cards for Daugavins.

"He did have a problem before he came up and we knew it," Murray said of Daugavins. "We didn’t want to send him back down. He played well and we’re pleased with his efforts in the last couple of games with us. But (the dental surgery) had to be done, so we’re letting that happen for him. Hopefully, he’ll recover quickly and we’ll have him available to us in the near future."

Senators prospects claim junior weekly honours

It was a day of honours Monday for two Senators prospects from the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Ottawa 67's centre Shane Prince, who racked up seven assists in victories over the Peterborough Petes and Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, has been named the Ontario Hockey League's player of the week. Meanwhile, Jean-Gabriel Pageau of the Gatineau Olympiques earned second star of the week honours in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League after racking up four goals and an assist in two games.

Prince was the Senators' second-round selection (61st overall) in the 2011 draft, while Pageau was a fourth-round selection (96th overall) in the annual lottery held in St. Paul, Minn.
