Bulletin: Senators announce the addition of the Bell HD Screen at Scotiabank Place
State-of-the-art scoreboard offers a 700 per cent increase in high-definition display space for fans
“I know our fans and our organization have waited a long time for this — and patience pays off. The Bell HD Screen will be among the best in the NHL,” said Senators owner Eugene Melnyk. “This new scoreboard represents the latest in video technology and will, without a doubt, take our in-game entertainment and fan experience to a whole new level. The timing could not be better as we will have it fully installed in time for Ottawa’s hosting of the 2012 NHL All-Star Game.”
The new center-hung scoreboard includes four high-definition (HD) screens and two light-emitting diode (LED) rings. The total display surface of the Bell HD Screen, including the two LED rings, will represent more than a 700 per cent increase in overall LED display space and will feature six separate displays. The Bell HD Screen will have 2,170 square feet of viewing space, compared to the existing scoreboard at Scotiabank place, which has 300 square feet of viewing space. Each of the four primary HD screens will be 331 square feet in size, in comparison to the existing boards, which are 75 square feet. This new Bell HD Screen is the largest board that can be installed into Scotiabank Place.
“As a company dedicated to bringing the best content to all the screens our customers may use, Bell understands how important the new Bell HD Screen will be in bringing Senators fans closer to the game at Scotiabank Place,” said Wade Oosterman, president of Bell Mobility and residential Services, and chief brand officer. “Bell has been a partner of the Ottawa Senators for all of its past 20 years and we’re thrilled to celebrate the anniversary with this great enhancement to the fan experience.”
“We continually look for ways to enrich the fan experience of attending a hockey game in person,” said Duncan Hannay, senior vice-president of marketing for Scotiabank. “Helping bring a new scoreboard to Scotiabank Place was a great opportunity for us to further demonstrate our commitment to hockey and support Ottawa Senators fans as they embrace a new, innovative way of celebrating our game.”
The Senators partnered with Panasonic, who is creating and installing the Bell HD Screen using the latest technology. The main screens boast the most advanced 6mm LED technology in the marketplace today. The surface mount diodes (SMD) will allow the system to produce over 2,000 nits of brightness and will provide viewing angles that approach 160 degrees in all directions. Each main screen contains 691,200 pixels, providing a resolution nine times clearer than the existing video screens.
"Panasonic is pleased to partner with the Senators to bring this spectacular new scoreboard to Scotiabank Place,” said James Doyle, president, Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company. “The technology and engineering are a true reflection of Panasonic's quality and technology leadership, and we worked closely to meet the Senators' objectives in bringing this solution to life, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the fan experience."
The centre-hung scoreboard was designed and procured through Anthony James Partners, a Canadian-owned consulting firm based in Richmond, Va. Ottawa native and AJP principal Michael Rowe has been working with the Senators for the past year to develop one of the most distinctive systems in the NHL today.
Installation of the new scoreboard will begin after the Senators’ home game on Dec. 22 and the four main video screens will be operational for the first time during Ottawa’s home game on Dec. 27 versus the Montreal Canadiens. The installation will continue during the month of January and will be completed prior to the 2012 Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition, which will take place on Saturday, Jan. 28.
