Silfverberg leads Brynas charge to Swedish semis
Jakob Silfverberg continues to carry the hot hand for his team in the Swedish Elite League playoffs.

On the strength of the Ottawa Senators forward prospect's nine points, Brynas IF has advanced to the Elitserien semifinal round after ousting Frolunda HC in six games in the first round of the playoffs. Heading into the semis, Silfverberg leads all players in goals (5) and points.

The 21-year-old native of Gavle ended the quarter-final set with Frolunda in dramatic fashion, scoring the game-winner at the 4:23 mark of overtime as Brynas edged Frolunda 4-3 at the Scandinavium in Goteborg. It was Silfverberg's second goal of the series-deciding contest.

Earlier in the series, Silfverberg scored twice and set up the OT winner as Brynas took Game 3 by the same 4-3 count, this one played at Lakerol Arena, Brynas' home rink in Gavle. His post-season scoring is just an extension of a campaign that saw Silfverberg finish second in Elitserien scoring during the regular season (24-30-54) and earn the 'Golden Helmet' award as the SEL's most valuable player, an honour determined by a vote of league players.

Brynas is now seeking its first Swedish championship since 1999 and sixth overall since league play began in 1975-76. However, Brynas faces an early uphill climb in the semifinals after falling to defending champ Farjestads BK 3-2 in double overtime in the series opener today in Gavle.

Game 2 of the series is Wednesday at the Lofbergs Lila Arena in Karlstad. A year ago, Farjestads ousted Brynas in five games in the quarter-finals en route to the Swedish crown.

In the SEL's other semifinal, Stockholm's AIK dumped Skelleftea 4-1 in their series opener.
