Senators making plans for new look on blue line

Ottawa GM says club likely 'moving on' from Kuba, could open door to prospects

It appears the Senators blue line is about to get a bit of a facelift.

In a media interview today, Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray suggested the club is likely to cut ties with veteran defenceman Filip Kuba when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

"I think we’re moving on," Murray told the Ottawa Citizen earlier today. "I haven’t heard from him. I talked to his agent before the year ended and told him sort of the thoughts I had, about what we might consider and I haven’t heard back. He’s going to get his money. I think he'’s going to get similar money to what he was earning with us. And I’m not going to go there, I don’t think."

If Kuba indeed departs the picture, it could open the door for either Mark Borowiecki or Patrick Wiercioch to earn a promotion from the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators. Both were drafted in 2008 and are considered among the organization's top prospects on the blue line.

"I hope (one of them) might be able to step in and play a chunk of games for us," said Murray, adding he'll also explore adding a veteran defenceman in free agency.

The Senators are also awaiting word on the status of captain Daniel Alfredsson, who has yet to decide whether he'll return for a 17th season in Ottawa. Murray told the Citizen that he believes he'll get a decision from Alfredsson — who turns 40 in December — by the end of the month.
