The Ottawa Senators won't need long to find themselves in a brighter spotlight this fall.

They'll land right in the middle of it on opening night of the 2012-13 National Hockey League season.

Under the glare of CBC's Hockey Night in Canada's cameras, the Senators will face off against the Canadiens at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Oct. 11, signalling the start of a new year for both the league and the country's most venerable hockey broadcaster. It's part of a season-opening CBC doubleheader that will also feature the Vancouver Canucks taking on the Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

For the Senators, it marks the second straight year they'll start the season on the road. But it won't take long for Ottawa fans to get a glimpse of their favourite team, as the Senators play their home-opener on Oct. 13 against the Washington Capitals at Scotiabank Place — the first time they've done so against Alex Ovechkin and Co.

Once again, the Senators schedule features matchups against all 29 NHL rivals, with all six other Canadian teams visiting Scotiabank Place at least once this season. Northeast Division foes Montreal and the Toronto Maple Leafs come to Ottawa three times, while the Winnipeg Jets — who remain in the Southeast Division for another season — play here twice. The Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, all of whom play in the Northwest Division, each make one appearance at Scotiabank Place.

The Senators have drawn the Flames for CBC's Hockey Day in Canada in 2012-13, with the teams slated to meet Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at Scotiabank Place as part of the network's day-long celebration of the game, which includes four contests involving all seven Canadian teams.

In total, 28 of the Senators' 41 home games will be played between Thursday and Sunday, split in this manner: Thursday (10), Friday (6), Saturday (8) and Sunday (4). As well, Ottawa will play on three Mondays, eight Tuesdays and two Wednesdays at Scotiabank Place.

The schedule also includes five matinee dates: Dec. 15 vs. the Los Angeles Kings — Ottawa's lone matchup of the season against the Stanley Cup champs (2 p.m.); Oct. 28 vs. the New York Rangers (1 p.m.); Nov. 4 vs. the Anaheim Ducks (1 p.m.); Dec. 23 against the Philadelphia Flyers (1 p.m.), and Jan. 13 vs. the New Jersey Devils (1 p.m.).

Other Senators schedule notes:

— When the Senators and Canadiens face off Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. at Scotiabank Place, it'll mark the 95th anniversary of the first NHL game played in Ottawa, which was held at the old Dey's Arena on Dec. 19, 1917.

— Besides the four Canadian teams, Western Conference foes visiting Scotiabank Place this season include the Kings, Ducks, Dallas Stars (Oct. 23), Phoenix Coyotes (Nov. 2), Detroit Red Wings (Dec. 29) and San Jose Sharks (Feb. 21).

— The Senators play 21 home games in the first half of the season, 20 in the back end. Every month of the season features seven dates at Scotiabank Place except October (four) and April (two).

— A five-game, 11-day homestand is scheduled from Dec. 13-23. Ottawa's longest road trips are Dec. 1-11 (five games) and Feb. 27-March 8 (five games).

— On 13 occasions, Ottawa will play back-to-back games. That's three fewer than each of the last two seasons.

— The 2013 NHL all-star celebration is set for Jan. 26-27 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Senators 2012-13 season-seat packages (full- and half-season, along with Flex 40) are now on sale, along with mini-plans. Pricing for game packs, groups and single-game tickets for the pre-season and regular season will be announced in August, along with the team's promotional schedule.
