Bell Capital Cup Opens Today

OTTAWA - After officially opening with the tournament’s inaugural FanFest and Esso Friendly Games at the Bell Sensplex on Thursday, the 14th annual Bell Capital Cup, the world’s premier atom and peewee hockey tournament, gets underway later today when all 380 teams make their tournament debut.

Bell Capital Cup tournament chair Cyril Leeder will be joined by Sandy Clement, regional director of community affairs for Bell Canada, Dodie Malcolm, president of the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association and Karen Parker, regional director for the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, for a ceremonial puck drop to officially kick off the tournament as the Girls atom AA division’s Kanata Rangers face the Oakville Hornets at 12:45 p.m. at the Bell Sensplex (Mattamy Homes pad).

The 2013 edition of the Bell Capital Cup, which runs through Tuesday, Jan. 1, includes 19 divisions, 380 teams and more than 6,500 players vying for the Allen J. MacDonald Memorial Trophy. This year’s field will be comprised of teams from five different countries, including Canada (three provinces and one territory), China (Hong Kong), Finland, Germany and the United States (with representation from nine individual states).

The National Capital Region welcomes more than 20,000 visitors to the area for the annual tournament, with a community impact that has seen the festival raise more than $2.4 million in direct support of minor hockey and local charities since its inception in 1999. The Bell Capital Cup has consistently generated a wide array of economic activity within the region, which will include the use of nearly 12,000 hotel rooms for this year’s event.

The Bell Capital Cup’s 19 divisions, including two girls’ groups, will play more than 800 games on 30 ice surfaces across Ottawa, from Stittsville to Navan and points in between. Each division’s championship game will be played at Scotiabank Place over the course of three days, from Sunday, Dec. 30, to Tuesday, Jan. 1. Scotiabank-Canadian Tire all-star games are slated for today in all divisions, with skills competitions taking place on Dec. 29 and 30.

Games of note for Friday, Dec. 28

Major atom A – Hong Kong Ice Scrapers vs. Skyland Kings at 12:45 p.m., Fred Barrett Arena

Major peewee AAA – German Eagles vs. Nepean Raiders at 9:45 a.m., Ray Friel Recreation Complex

Girls peewee AA – Elites de l’Estrie vs. Toronto Leaside Wildcats at 9:15 a.m., Bell Sensplex (Palladium Insurance pad)

Scotiabank-Canadian Tire all-star games

The Bell Capital Cup is pleased to continue offering players in each division the opportunity to participate in a Scotiabank-Canadian Tire all-star game. In total, 28 all-star games will be played across all 19 divisions, beginning today at 5:30 p.m. Players in the game will receive a take-home Scotiabank-Canadian Tire all-star jersey as a souvenir. Each game will include the presentation of the Canadian Tire three-star selection — a goaltender (Adam Harlow Trophy), a defenceman and a forward.

Adam Harlow Trophy

The Adam Harlow Trophy is awarded to the top goaltender in each all-star game. Adam Harlow died at the age of 10 on March 24, 2002. He played in the Kemptville District Minor Hockey League for three years and came into his own as a goalie for the Kemptville Panthers. Adam is survived by his parents, Lajla and Bob, and siblings Julie and Mark. He was devoted to the game and was very proud to be chosen as his team's only goalie. Hockey was Adam's greatest passion in life.
