News Release: Sens Foundation Officially Opens Sens RINC at Jules Morin Park
OTTAWA - The Sens Foundation, in partnership with the Ottawa Senators and the City of Ottawa, officially opened the second phase of its community rinks initiative when the ribbon of the Sens RINC (Recreational Investments in Neighbourhood Communities) project at Jules Morin Park was cut earlier this afternoon.

In addition to funds stemming from the joint partnership, the Sens RINC at Jules Morin Park is also supported by $100,000 donations from both the Maharaja’s Ball and 24 h of skiing at Mont Tremblant community events that designate the Sens Foundation as a beneficiary. Funds have been used to offset construction-related costs to the RINC.

Senators president Cyril Leeder joined Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, Senators alternate captain and Sens RINC project honourary chair Jason Spezza, Councillor Mathieu Fleury, Sens Foundation president Danielle Robinson and Senators head coach Paul MacLean to officially open the rink to residents and neighbourhood children of Ottawa’s Lowertown district. Also in attendance were Maharaja’s Ball chair Nalin Bhargava and 24 h of ski of Tremblant event producer Simon St-Arnaud

“The RINC project is just another way to show how important the Sens Foundation and the Ottawa Senators are to our community,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “This new community rink will provide a great new recreation option for families and reinvigorate Jules Morin Park for years to come.”

The City of Ottawa has committed to the revitalization of Jules Morin Park with the Sens RINC serving as the initial component of the project. The RINC project at Jules Morin Park includes hockey dasher boards, fencing, hockey nets in the winter and lacrosse nets in the summer. Managed by the city, the free Sens RINC Project’s recreational spaces will offer skating and hockey clinics as well as summer sporting programs for hundreds of children and youth.

“Some of my favourite memories from my youth are of playing hockey with friends on outdoor rinks,” said Spezza. “When my wife and I first got involved in this project more than a year ago, I was as excited as I am today. This is a great initiative that I believe is very important to this community. Thanks to the support this project has received, I’m glad that kids in this neighbourhood will soon be able to experience the thrill of playing hockey outdoors.”

“Today’s opening represents another significant step forward for the Sens Foundation, the Senators and our partners,” said Robinson. “The Sens RINC project encompasses great teamwork and a mutual desire to see marked improvement in recreational opportunities in at-risk neighbourghoods throughout the region. We look ahead with excitement to completing additional rinks throughout the region and the ensuing lifestyle benefits it will bring for local residents.”

During the Senators 20th anniversary season of 2011-12, the Sens Foundation and hockey club committed to building 20 outdoor rinks in at-risk neighbourhoods in Ottawa, Gatineau and surrounding regions. The opening of the Sens RINC at Jules Morin Park is the second rink of its commitment and the second opening within the year after the Rink of Dreams at Marion Dewar Plaza was declared open on Jan. 25, 2012. The Sens Foundation, along with donors and partners, will have invested more than $6.5 million into the national capital region upon successful completion of the Sens RINC project.
