News Release: Senators re-sign defenceman Patrick Wiercioch to a three-year contract
OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has re-signed defenceman Patrick Wiercioch to a three-year contract.
Wiercioch, 22, appeared in 42 of Ottawa’s 48 regular-season games in 2012-13, registering a career high with 19 points (five goals, 14 assists), a plus-nine rating and 39 penalty minutes, while leading team defencemen with three power-play markers. His plus-nine rating also led team defenceman and saw him finish the season tied for the overall team lead. He ranked second among National Hockey League rookie defencemen (and ninth among all league rookies) in scoring.
A native of Burnaby, B.C., Wiercioch was recalled by the Senators from the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, where he began last season ahead of the abbreviated NHL campaign. He remained with Ottawa for the duration of the season after having recorded 19 points (10 goals, nine assists), a plus-10 rating and 22 penalty minutes in 33 regular-season AHL contests.
In 50 career NHL games, Wiercioch has recorded 21 points (five goals, 16 assists) and 43 penalty minutes. A member of the B-Sens team that captured the Calder Cup following the 2010-11 season, he has registered 57 points (18 goals, 39 assists) over 156 career AHL contests, all of which have occurred as a member of the B-Sens.
Wiercioch was Ottawa’s second-round selection (42nd overall) in the 2008 NHL Draft.
